The Way We Played the Game: A True Story of One Team and the Dawning of American Football
Published in Paperback by Sourcebooks Trade (September, 2002)
Author: John Armstrong
Average review score:

Excellent Book, I can't put it down
This is an excellent book for all ages. John Armstrong pulls you right in to a classic story about the 1902 Benton Harbor football team as they struggle through every dangerous, harsh game after another. This book is an excellent gift for football fans and even people who just share our passion and the love of the game. Football fan or not, this is an excellent novel and an excellent piece of culture. After you read this book, the games will never end.

A Wonderful Read
This book is fantastic, especially for someone who understands football. It is technical regarding football, but the story, which is true, develops beautifully. I couldn't put this book down, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves great books and great football.

Will's Way
Published in Hardcover by Esotericom (July, 2001)
Author: Rob Benton
Average review score:

A GREAT BOOK!!!
Will's Way is a masterfully crafted tale that packs a real life punch. A must read for anyone who wants to know the truth about life on the street and just how easy it can be to end up there. I highly recommend this book!

Comments on Will's Way
This novel gives a graphic description of what it's like to go completely down and out on booze. The book begins by telling how the title character, Will, goes downhill through his alcoholism. The plot goes a little more slowly in the first part, but it picks up and gets really good by the time Will is out on the streets, which is not too far into the book.

The descriptions of life as a homeless person are really graphic. But this part of the book is not all tawdry and downtrodden as one might expect. Even at his worst moments, Will runs into some humorous situations, especially a couple of times when he's dealing with governent workers.

I like the book because it gives a real insight into what a homeless person goes through. The characters talk a lot, so it stays interesting all the way through. It appears that the author wrote it in a simple way on purpose, because it is easy to understand--no underlying symbolism or preaching, just a good story told from start to finish.

The Wisdom of Dolphins
Published in Paperback by Sourcebooks Trade (January, 2000)
Authors: Susan E. Yoder and Major T. Benton
Average review score:

A Deeper Understanding
A "must read" for those interested in both a basic knowledge of dolphins and in the more esoteric areas. Many areas of the book indicate the difficulty in finding words to describe experiences with dolphins, yet page after page of text conveys the feelings and wonderment which come from encountering dolphins. For those who have yet to have a personal experience with dolphins, the book provides a deeper understanding of their world and what it's like to be in their presence. For those of us privileged to have been in their presence and perhaps even interacted with them, the personal accounts and stories will bring us right back to those times. After reading the book, I felt again "filled up" with the contentment that comes with knowing the dolphins.

A Precious Gift
Reading this book, I am envious of those trainers who make a living communicating with these precious gifts from the sea. I am amazed as I read about the intelligence level and instinct for love possessed by dolphins! Dolphins make astonishing therapists -- helping the mentally retarded as well as the seekers of life. Several individuals even change their careers and lifestyles after working with these "animals." I am confounded. I cannot thank you enough, Amazon.com, for allowing readers to review wonderful and life-changing books. To others, read this book. You will not regret it!

The Art of Welded Sculpture
Published in Hardcover by Van Nostrand Reinhold (Trade) (November, 1975)
Author: Suzanne. Benton
Average review score:

Fabulous book for female welders.
Welding and metal work can be a difficult field to break into as a female at times, and I greatly enjoyed a feeling of camaraderie from this book, in that it is written to a female audience. It contains everything one would need to know about getting started in metal work and also gives insight and inspiration from more personal stories by the author. I have to give Suzanne credit for having braved the teritory that she did at the time she wrote this book. It was inspiring and motivating to see how much she had accompolished and it's nice to feel like you have a companion in a such an amazing craft.

A Great Work From a Great Painter
Tom Benton could have been a great writer if he hadn't have made such an important name for himself as a Regionialist painter. This book describes, in a passionate honesty, Benton's beliefs on Art and life. Anyone who wants to learn more about the man behind the irrascible myth should read this book!

Arts and Culture: An Introduction to the Humanities
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (June, 1998)
Authors: Janetta Rebold Benton and Robert Diyanni
Average review score:

Finest humanities textbook I've seen
We used this textbook for a humanities survey course at my high school. My teacher said it was the finest he'd seen out of dozens, and after using it for his class, I have to agree. The art, maps, pictures, and everything help bring the past to life, and the text, while easy to read, says everything it needs to.

One of the best summaries of the main marketing and economic forces shaping banks: how banks can find competitive advantage, price products, measure their performance, segment their markets, create barriers to imitation, manage risk. Beauty and the Book: Fine Editions and Cultural Distinction in America (Henry McBride Series in Modernism and Modernity)
Published in Hardcover by Yale Univ Pr (May, 2000)
Author: Megan Benton
Average review score:

Outstanding and involving -- a bibliophile's pleasure.
This cultural history of post-World War I publishing and fine editions provides a narrower focus than most books on publishing, considering how deluxe editions evolved, how publishers came to specialize in the limited edition book market, and how their personalities influenced their creations. Any bibliophile will find this outstanding and involving.

Birds
Published in Hardcover by Pomegranate (June, 2002)
Author: William Benton
Average review score:

Tweedy Birds
"Birds" is a playful and intriguing collection of the author's observations and take-offs on the names, habits, and environments of various birds. Each page is a visual pun, an arrangement of letters making a picture as inclusive as the proverbial thousand words. Birders, poets, artists, teachers, children, typesetters, take special note. This book is unique, and magical.
